Secured Transport DVS Installation: A Low-Downtime London Fleet Safety Upgrade

A fleet-safety installation only works for the operator if the vehicle is safe, properly tested and back at work when it is needed. That was the brief when Secured Transport asked Samora Vision to prepare a DAF truck for operation in London.

We completed the work early in the morning, fitting and configuring a standalone Direct Vision Standard safety system before the vehicle's scheduled operations. The result was a clear, dependable driver-assistance setup, minimal disruption to the working day and a set of installation records for the operator's permit file.

The brief: improve nearside visibility without losing a working day

Commercial vehicles earn their keep on the road, so taking a truck out of service for an installation has a real operational cost. Secured Transport needed the vehicle prepared for London work, but the upgrade also had to fit around its existing schedule.

Our plan was simple: arrive early, complete the installation and calibration methodically, test every warning function and return the truck to service with as little downtime as possible.

What we installed

The standalone system brought together the key equipment the driver needed to monitor the vehicle's nearside risk area:

  • Nearside blind-spot camera to give the driver a clear view alongside the vehicle.

  • In-cab monitor positioned to display the camera view without obstructing normal driving visibility.

  • Vulnerable-road-user detection system configured to identify cyclists and pedestrians entering the defined risk area.

  • Audible warning equipment to provide clear alerts when the system detects a potential hazard.

The equipment was installed as a standalone solution, giving the operator the required on-vehicle visibility and warning functions without adding unnecessary complexity.

Why configuration and testing matter

Fitting the components is only part of the job. Camera position, viewing angle, sensor coverage and warning behaviour all need to work together around the specific vehicle.

We carefully configured the nearside detection zone and checked it around the truck. The aim was to give the driver useful visual and audible information when a cyclist or pedestrian enters the risk area, with the camera view and warning display supporting quick, confident decisions.

The system was tested before handover so the customer could see how it responded and understand what each alert meant in normal operation.

Early-morning installation kept disruption to a minimum

Timing was a key part of this project. By carrying out the installation before the vehicle's planned work, we avoided using the middle of the operating day for workshop time.

This approach is particularly valuable for busy transport and logistics businesses. A well-planned appointment, the right equipment prepared in advance and an experienced installation process can turn a necessary safety upgrade into a short, controlled period of downtime.

Handover evidence for the operator's records

Once testing was complete, we recorded the finished installation and supplied supporting evidence for Secured Transport's London DVS permit records.

Clear photographs and installation information help an operator maintain an organised vehicle file. They also provide a useful reference if equipment is inspected, moved, repaired or upgraded later.

Standalone or connected fleet-safety systems?

This vehicle required a standalone setup, but the right solution depends on the operator. Some fleets need local camera views and driver warnings; others benefit from connected systems with remote footage access, live view, health monitoring, tracking or event data.
